After seeing the Calipri measuring device on show at Germany’s global rail industry exhibition, InnoTrans, Irish Rail contacted us to learn more about the innovative laser system.
Irish Rail has its own manufacturing facility for wheels and axles, to produce rolling stock that will run on Ireland’s bespoke track dimensions. Chief mechanical engineer, Paul Smyth, placed an order with us for two Calipri units to measure wheel profiles, diameter and clearance on some 600 units from its base in Dublin.
The firm had previously used mechanical gauges to measure and record wheelset data, logging details manually and entering them separately onto a computer system. The process took a significant amount of manpower and time.
We provided specific set up and calibration of the Calipri device to suit Irish Rail’s needs and the system is now playing a vital role in measuring the tight tolerances required in the wheel production process.
The firm estimates using the laser system is at least four or five times quicker than its previous method of analysis, allowing rolling stock to be returned to service more quickly and ultimately saving money.
Paul Smyth said: “We were really impressed with how easy Calipri is to use and how accurately it records measurements. We also liked the fact it is hand-held and very durable, which is important when you’re working out on track.”
